VASCO: The High Court at Panjim, hearing the case of demolition of 205 Baina hutments has fixed the matter for further hearing on May 5. An affidavit-in-rejoinder was also filed on behalf of the petitioners on Wednesday.
Sources said the court ordered extension of ‘status quo’ till May 5, as the hearing in this matter was not completed. However, the order further clarified, “This status quo order shall not be applicable to those persons who are petitioners in this writ petition and have also filed civil suit. This clarification was issued by the High Court after it was informed by M Salkar that some of the petitioners have also filed the civil suit before the district court.
After demolishing 84 houses at Desterro on April 15, the State government was set to demolish 205 illegally shanties, however the Baina Residents Welfare Association and other residents approached the High Court seeking relief before the State administration could demolish their structures.
