The UFBU, which is an umbrella of nine bank unions, has gone on a two-day bank strike starting from Thursday.

“The protest was called to oppose the Central government’s decision to privatise several banks in the country,” said Santosh Haldankar, convenor of United Forum of Bank Unions, Goa.

“If banks are privatised, public money will be at stake. In addition, there will be no employment security if public sector banks are privatised,” added Haldankar.

Answering to a question pertaining to the recurring complaints by bank customers regarding the arrogant behaviour of public sector staff in comparison to those of private sector, the convenor said that due to shortage of bank employees, a single employee has to look after the multiple counters of the bank. This problem must be tackled and rectified by the respective bank branches.
