MARGAO: Congress MLA Digambar Kamat has asserted that he is answerable only to the people of Margao and nobody else.
In the aftermath of the recent political developments, specifically where Kamat has been accused of anti-party activities and a co-conspirator to split the Congress Legislative Party (CLP), the Margao legislator has chosen to fight back on the merits of his electoral strength.
On the sidelines of an event in Margao, Kamat said that being in power or not in power doesn’t make any difference to him.
“I don’t care for anybody else except the people of Margao. Speculations about my switching of parties have been in discussion for the last several years and it continues, but I am not disturbed at all. Because being in power or not in power doesn’t make any difference to me,” Kamat spoke with a straight face responding to rumours of a political switch from the Congress to the BJP.
It is pertinent to note that on the eve of the monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Congress leadership had accused Kamat of splitting the legislative wing of the party alongwith Calangute MLA Michael Lobo. While Lobo was stripped of Leader of Opposition’s (LoP) post, Kamat was within days removed as permanent invitee to the Central Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision making body of the Congress party. Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) also filed a disqualification petition against the two legislators.
Stating that his workers and supporters were disturbed when the party denied him position of LoP, Kamat said “Yes, I am retired hurt which means I will be ready to take responsibilities once I become fit. I had informed my sentiments to the party leaders long before and hence the question of switching of party doesn’t arise at all.”
Damodar Shirodkar, Margao Municipal Councillor and close aide of Kamat told media that workers and supporters have already given green signal to their MLA to go ahead with a decision that he thinks is correct for the betterment of Margao.
Responding to a question, Kamat said, “Will discuss with the Goa Forward Party Chief and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai pertaining with regard to decision about the next chairperson of Margao Municipality.”
Kamat informed that nearly 1000 saplings of fruit bearing trees will be planted in the Margao Constituency.
