BELGAUM: A long-pending dream of the people of Belgaum to have a Belgaum-Goa flight may come true as industrialists and trading community along with politicians assisted by the district administration are putting up relentless efforts for the implementation of the proposed Mumbai-Goa flights via Belgaum. Karnataka Minister for Small and Medium Scale Industries Prakash Hukkeri, who was submitted a memorandum in this regard, said he is personally following up the matter with the Centre and the dream may become a reality.
Belgaum airport which is about 10 kms away from Belgaum is one of the prominent and oldest airports in India. Spread over 440 acres of land, the expansion work on this airport is in full swing.
Based on the announcement made by the ministry of civil aviation looking out possibilities in this direction, Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) and other organizations have sent letters to Secretary for Civil Aviation K N Shrivastava urging him to initiate measures in this direction.
“We urge you to commence the services at the earliest,” the BCCI has urged adding that Belgaum is a strategically located educational, industrial, agricultural, technological, medical and commercial center and has proximity to Goa.
While the upgradation of Belgaum airport is on, authorities in Belgaum have also requested the ministry of civil aviation to take up the work of extending the runway that has been already sanctioned, enabling up gradation of air traffic facilities.
