Benaulim church heist solved, stolen property recovered

Robbery took place on May 13 in which two culprits stole laptops and mobile phones and cash at knifepoint; breakthrough achieved by tracking stolen phones

MARGAO: The May 13 St John the Baptist Church, Benaulim robbery case has finally been solved by the Colva police with the arrest of the husband-wife duo of Carlos and Leena Dias.
Following the arrest of the duo, the police has recovered the stolen property comprising of the laptops, besides the weapons used in the heist.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Uttam Raut Desai said the police were tracking down the movement of the two unknown accused by bringing the two stolen mobile phones from the church under surveillance. “On September 1, one of the two stolen cell phones was activated under the name of Leena Dias. This information gave us a huge lead in the mystery behind the church robbery,” PI Uttam said.
While Leena was arrested earlier this month, the husband was nabbed with the help of LIB police personnel attached to the Colva, Margao and Maina-Curtorim and Cuncolim police stations. “The husband was spotted moving around in a Wagon-R car and he was finally intercepted at Mandopa-Navelim, leading to his arrest,” he said.
St John the Baptist Church Parish Priest Fr Nelson Colaco has complimented the police team in detecting the case.
