MARGAO: The Goa Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation appears ready with estimates to take up underground sewerage works along Salcete’s coastal belt.

But the fate of the underground line would largely depend on the availability of funds from the government.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had announced in the Legislative Assembly that work on the underground sewerage line in Benaulim and Colva would commence after the monsoons, but till date there seems to be no action on the ground.

Highly placed sources said that the Goa Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation has completed work on preparing estimates for the ambitious project in the villages of Colva, Benaulim, Varca and other villages.

It is learnt that work on laying the underground line in the two villages of Benaulim and Colva itself will cost the exchequer a whooping Rs 100 crore. This includes the cost of setting up of a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant.

Sources said that the authorities have already identified land owned by a government department to set up the STP, but asserted that the fate of the project would depend on funds.

The issue of underground sewage line was taken up by Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva in the Assembly as Salcete’s coastal belt, which attrcats a large number of tourists,  is facing a major problem of sewage and waste disposal.
