MARGAO: Questions were raised by locals about the presence of a large amount of rubble in the low-lying fields of Benaulim, in the area where the Western Bypass is supposed to be constructed. This is the same stretch that was flooded during a spell of heavy rains in July last year.

Initially, there were doubts if the rubble that had been dumped was for the Western Bypass work and this had raised further concerns, as it would have meant that the alignment of the bypass road was taking a different turn.
Work on the bypass is already underway in Mungul.
However, the locals later realised that the rubble had been dumped by a private party. “This is actually land filling done by unidentified miscreants, who have taken advantage of the nearby land filling being carried out for the Western Bypass,” claimed a local resident.
The villagers have appealed to the Benaulim panchayat to investigate the matter. Considering that the village has been objecting to the filling of the low-lying fields for the construction of the Western Bypass, the locals want the authorities to inspect the site and act accordingly. The locals’ demand for getting the bypass constructed on stilts through flood-prone Benaulim is yet to receive an assurance from the State or Central government.
