Benaulim VP appoints lawyer, to file writ petition in High Court

MARGAO: In an interesting development with regards to the proposed Western Bypass project, the Benaulim Panchayat on Thursday resolved to appoint Adv Dhawal Zaveri to represent it in filing a writ petition before the Bombay High Court at Goa, demanding the construction of the western bypass on stilts and to seek a stay on the ongoing land filling work. 

On Thursday, several villagers visited the panchayat office and discussed the issue with the panchas. They demanded that the issue be resolved at the earliest and the panchayat appoint a lawyer to represent it in the High Court.

Earlier on Wednesday, Benaulim and Mungul locals had protested the ongoing work of the proposed Western Bypass. They had urged the panchayat to pass a resolution in this regard and fight the legal battle in the court. 

Hence, on Thursday, a group of locals again met the panchayat and demanded a resolution in this regard, upon which the Benaulim Panchayat resolved to appoint an advocate to represent it in the High Court. 

Speaking to Herald, deputy sarpanch Nilesh Prabhudesai said on the request of locals, the panchayat has resolved to appoint Adv Dhawal Zaveri as their representative to file writ petition before the High Court. 

“Now, the panchayat will file a writ petition before the High Court, requesting for stay on the ongoing work of the western bypass at Benaulim and will also file a case to demand that the western bypass be built on stilts,” he said.

He said the advocate was recommended by newly elected Aam Aadmi Party MLA Venzy Viegas. 

The deputy sarpanch informed that the panchayat held a meeting before taking the resolution, and also discussed the issue with the locals, who visited the panchayat.
