PANJIM: Panjim police have arrested a woman from Bengaluru for allegedly cheating a city based resort to the tune of Rs 2.34 lakhs by impersonating as an NRI during the booking and stay at the resort.
According to information from the police, the accused has been identified as 31-year-old Davina Margaret Bennet. The resident of Bengaluru was arrested from Anjuna after a complaint was filed by Steve Almeida, Director of Loss Prevention of the resort.
Police informed that the accused person had checked into the hotel on May 25 using an online travel website for booking her stay. During her stay in the hotel she impersonated herself as an NRI suffering from cancer and that her mother apparently worked in the Indian Embassy in the United Kingdom.
The complainant further stated that on the pretext of being highly connected, she befriended the associates and staff of the hotel and demanded large amounts of money from them, to sort out their issues and thereafter left the hotel without intimation and without clearing the hotel dues, thereby cheating them to the tune of Rs 2,34,210.
Police have registered an FIR under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code. LPSI Manisha Mardolkar is investigating the case.
