As it has turned out, while it’s seven months since the Margao civic body set out on a task to implement door-to-door waste collection, the municipality has suddenly realised that it is facing a shortage of around 400 big-sized bins.
While civic officials say that a proposal from the municipality has gone to the government for procurement of 400 bins, nothing has been heard from the Director of Municipal Administration.
“We are facing a shortage of 400 big size bins for the moment. The civic body requires a minimum of 250 bins on a priority basis to streamline the door-to-door waste collection system,” said an official in the know. In the absence of these bins, the movement of waste collection workers is hit hard, as workers had to wait for the arrival of the garbage trucks for unloading the waste, before covering the rest of the households.
“The issue of big size bins was discussed with officials of the Director of Municipal Administration when the system was being implemented in the city around August last, but in vain,” said a civic official.
