PANJIM: With Narendra Modi set to make his maiden visit to Goa on June 14 as the country’s Prime Minister, the All India Trade Union Congress has said that mining stakeholders want him to announce how fast mining activities in the State would be resumed in a sustainable manner, and within the parameters of the April 21 Supreme Court order. The trade union body also accused BJP-led government in the State of playing politics on the issue.
According to AITUC, it has been nearly two months since Supreme Court lifted the mining ban and till date there is neither a clear-cut mining policy nor policy for allotment of fresh mining leases and protecting jobs and service conditions of workers employed in various mining establishments.
The Supreme Court on April 24 had lifted the 18-month-long mining ban in Goa and directed the State government to allow the activity in a transparent manner by following rules.
It can be recalled that Modi while addressing over one lakh people in Panjim on January 12 had assured resumption of mining activities with transparency soon after BJP forms the government at the Centre.
“Modi and the BJP MPs during Lok Sabha campaign had assured immediate solution to the mining crisis after coming to power. It is high time now that voices of people of Goa are heard,” AITUC said.
