BICHOLIM: The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) officials on Tuesday evicted some vendors who were found selling goods in the market by evading the Sopo Tax and penalised those who were using plastic bags.
The BMC team, led by BMC Deputy Chairman Narayan Betkikar and BMC Chief Officer Vishnudas Arlekar, carried out the sudden drive and spotted some vegetable vendors and others hawkers who were selling goods in the market without paying any Sopo Tax to the municipality.
“We had heard that such activities were going on by vendors who were trying to evade the tax and so, we decided to carry out this operation,” said Betkikar.
“The BMC also removed the plastic sheets and other things used by some shopkeepers outside their establishments.”
“We checked the vegetable vendors and other shops and found that they were still using plastic bags. We fined some of them up to maximum of Rs 2,000. We will continue with the drive for next few days,” Betkikar added.
