According to the Margao wholesale fish market association, on May 11, there was nuisance created by about 15 members of Cutbona Boat Owners Committee whereby they forcefully blocked and removed interstate vehicles of MH registration which were parked in the wholesale fish market and were full of fish brought in for sale.
President of the association, M Ibrahim said that those 15 members removed the vehicles and also damaged one of them. “They were not allowed to sell fish in the wholesale market. As a result, the fish brought in went bad. The estimated loss of the spoiled fish is in lakhs. They also obstructed people who had come to purchase fish from the market. This incident took place at around 4:20 am on May 11 in the presence of police personnel who were mere spectators. The entire fish market was ruled by these 15 members as if there was no law and order,” said Ibrahim.
The wholesale fish market traders warned that if such incidents occur again, it would lead to bigger fights and breach of peace in the fish market. The two-day ban from May 12-13 has been called by the wholesale fish traders to condemn the act of the Cutbona trawler owners and create a loss for the traders in the process.
They claim that 90 percent of the fish which is consumed in Goa comes from other states and not from Goa.
