MAPUSA: Calangute police on Thursday identified the foreign tourist, whose body was found hanging from a banyan tree at Candolim last week as that of 40-year-old British national Julie Ann Warner.
It may be recalled that on Saturday, the Calangute police had found the body of a female tourists hanging from a banyan tree and registered a case of unnatural death. After conducting panchanama, Calangute police sent the body to Goa Medical College (GMC) at Bambolim for post mortem. The autopsy certified cause of death due to asphyxia and cerebral venous congestion as a result of hanging by ligature.
A senior police officer informed Herald that Calangute Police informed that they have identified the deceased as Julie Ann Warner.
“It has come to light that she is a 40-year-old British national. We have informed the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Panjim, the British Embassy and the victim’s family. It appears to be a case of suicide but further investigation is underway,” he said.
Sources, who saw the victim at Candolim, informed Herald that since the body has been identified, the police can now commence with the criminal investigation and not just come to a conclusion that it is a suicide.
“Various aspects need to be looked into such as her mental health, place of stay during her visit, any fight or circumstance that triggered before the incident. If the lady hung herself then how come her legs were touching the ground? These cases where people are found hanging are not always suicide. Now it is in the hands of the police to see that there is more to this than meets the eye,” the source said.
