The Margao Urban Health Centre along with Hospicio hospital on Friday organised a breast and cervical cancer detection camp at the health centre.
Around 140 high risk women were selected through a questionnaire and examined by ultra sonography/mammograms and PAP smears.
The camp was inaugurated by Hospcio Medical superintendent Dr Ruand de Sa in the presence of Urban Health Officer Dr Geeta Kakodkar. The patients were examined by surgeons Dr Deepa Correa, Dr Suraj Prabhudessai, while PAP smears were taken by gynecologists Dr Purnima and Dr Sherly Egipsy, Ultrasonographies by Dr Siona Gomes and Dr Vanita Bandekar. General examinations were carried out by Dr Anju Kharangate. Dr Sharmila Sardesai and Babita Agarwal of Muskaan educated the patients on the importance of breast self examination every month.
Doctors informed that patients are generally considered high risk if they have a family history of breast cancers, have early menopause, have no children or do not breast feed their children.
The program was organized as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness and detection initiative by the Directorate of Health Services recently launched by Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane.
