Built a plane at 14, rejected million-dollar offers: Why Sabrina Pasterski is called the next Einstein

Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is often compared to Albert Einstein, not because she has matched his achievements, but because she is working on one of physics’ greatest unsolved mysteries—reconciling gravity with quantum mechanics.

Born in Chicago in 1993, Pasterski displayed extraordinary talent from an early age. At just 12, she began building a Zenith CH 601 XL aircraft from a kit and completed the project before turning 14. She later flew the single-engine plane herself, years before she was legally old enough to drive.

Her passion for science continued at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she graduated in only three years with a perfect 5.0 GPA. She became the first woman in nearly two decades to top MIT’s physics department and also earned the prestigious Orloff Scholarship.

Pasterski went on to complete her PhD at Harvard University under renowned physicist Andrew Strominger. Alongside Strominger and Alexander Zhiboedov, she co-developed research on the spin memory effect, a concept related to gravitational waves and spacetime. The work gained global recognition and was cited by the late Stephen Hawking in some of his final scientific papers.

Despite reportedly receiving lucrative offers from NASA, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and even a reported $1.1 million academic package from Brown University, Pasterski chose a different path. She joined Canada’s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in 2021, where she launched the Celestial Holography Initiative. The project later secured an $8 million grant from the Simons Foundation.

Her research focuses on one of science’s biggest challenges: developing a theory that unites Einstein’s theory of gravity with quantum mechanics. Solving this puzzle could transform our understanding of black holes, the Big Bang and the fundamental nature of space and time.

While Pasterski has never claimed to be the “next Einstein,” her groundbreaking work and relentless curiosity have made her one of the most closely watched theoretical physicists of her generation.
