PONDA: Gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh were stolen from a house at Ratamol-Kapileshwari, Ponda, on Thursday, with burglars even going to the extent of removing the bangles from a family member who was asleep in the house.
Ponda Police now suspect that the burglars could have sedated the occupants, before searching the entire house for valuables, since the burglars were able to remove the bangles from the family member without arousing any suspicion.
The incident came to light early Thursday morning when one of the occupants raised an alarm after realizing that four gold bangles were removed from her hands and few other gold ornaments were missing from the cupboards.
According to Ponda Police, the burglars entered the house by removing the window grill and tied the latch of the front door using a rope from outside, similar modus operandi in the burglary reported a day before in South Goa. Police suspect it could be the same gang involved in the crime.
According to information, the complainant, Vinayak Naik, fell asleep while reading a book in one of the rooms on the ground floor, while his wife and two children were asleep in another room on the first floor.
The complainant said he was awake till 2 am and could not recollect what happened after that. The door of the room where Naik was sleeping was also found clamped using a shirt.
Raising concern over rising number of such incidents, Queula (Kavlem) Sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar said there is fear among people as the State’s security agencies have failed to nab culprits.
“There are rising number of such incidents reported in the State including the one reported in South Goa just yesterday. It gives an impression of the failure of the State Home Ministry,” stated Kavlekar.
“This is the third burglary incident in the area within a year and I feel the government must do something as there is a big question mark over the safety of people in the State,” added Kavlekar.
Ponda Police said a finger print expert was pressed into service however till late evening police could not use the services of dog squad as it was reported to be on duty
in some other location in the State.
