Burglars strike again, flee with Rs 5 lakh booty in Navelim

MARGAO: Burglars appear to be having a good run in Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado’s home village Navelim with the miscreants targeting bungalows and residential apartments at will.
Menino Pereira became the latest victim of the burglars when they decamped with foreign currency, cash, gold bangles and a credit card totally worth over Rs five lakh last night.
The burglary assumes significance as it comes moments after the inmates headed to the NUSI hospital at Cuncolim at midnight with Menino after he fell ill late Friday.
His wife Martha, who returned home in the morning was shocked to find the door lock broken. Her worst fears came true when she found the cupboards ransacked inside and cash of Rs 54,000, besides 600 US and Canadian dollars, a gold bangle weighing 18 gms and a credit card missing from the cupboard.
In the meantime, the same accused persons are believed to have stolen a Bullet motorcycle parked in the compound of a neighbouring house of Deepak Sawant. Incidentally, there was an attempt to burgle Deepak’s house last week, but the culprits had managed to lift only the keys of the motorcycle. 
The spate of burglaries and thefts in Navelim has created a scare in the village with the police unable to solve even one case till date. Navelim MLA and Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado had called for a meeting with Margao police this evening, but the meeting was postponed as the police were occupied at the Nehru stadium, Fatorda in view of the ISL match.
When contacted, Avertano admitted that Navelim village has seen a number of thefts in recent times, adding that he had fixed the meeting in a bid to review the situation. The meeting is expected to take place on Sunday.
