Burglars strike gold at Margao
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, SEPT 28
In a daring daylight burglary, burglars struck gold worth lakhs of rupees from a residential apartment near Salgaoncar chambers, at Margao on Tuesday.
The burglary took place in two flats in broad daylight when the inmates of the house had gone out, only to find the apartment burgled after their return around noon.
The burglars effected entry into the flats by breaking open the latch of the main door. Once inside, they ransacked the cupboards and laid their hands on the gold ornaments, whose value is estimated around lakhs of rupees. They also lifted away cash belonging to the daughter of the owner. A 21 coin bracelet and gold chains studded with stones were the items lifted away from the apartment.
Flat owner Roque D’Silva informed that he along with his wife had gone to the Church for the morning mass and returned back home at around 9.45 am after shopping. “I kept the goods inside the house and left after latching the door. When I returned back around noon, I found my neighbour standing near the apartment. My worst fears came true when the cupboards were left ransacked and the valuables missing”, he said.
Roque immediately intimated the incident to the Margao police, who are investigating into the case.
This is not the first time that flats have been burgled during daytime when the inmates are out of the house. In a recent case, unknown culprits effected entry into a house near the BPS club and decamped with valuables after the owner went out by locking the door to bring his child from the Holy Spirit grounds.
