PANJIM: The state cabinet cleared the Mining Dump Policy to regulate dumping of ore rejects in private and government property and to ban creation of additional dumps in the state and encroachments for dumps. The policy will tackle already existing dumps by imposition of fees for the land used.
The government has imposed various fee structures for using private property or government land for stacking of ore by the lease holder.
The policy imposes Rs 120 per square meter on ore stored in private property and Rs 220 per square meter on dumps stacked in government property. No forest land can be used for this purpose, Parrikar categorically stated.
“Only authorized mining lease holders can apply for this conversion,” the chief minister said projecting a revenue generation from this exercise to the tune of Rs 300 crore.
He said that those dumps which remain idle after a specific period of time will
be confiscated by the government and auctioned.
In addition to paying the fees the lease holder has also been assigned the responsibility of clearing dumps and restoring the land to its original position.
He also said that not more than 10 per cent of this ore from dumps could be exported.
Asked for the number of such dumps in the state, Parrikar said he did not have the figure, but it is estimated that there may be around 720 such dumps across Goa.
