Cacra fishermen allege non-collection of corpus fund by Fisheries Dept

PANJIM: Flagging an issue of concern to their community, Cacra fishermen have alleged that the Goa Fisheries Department has not collected the corpus fund from traditional fishermen since 2014. This disclosure has ignited discontent among the fishing community, raising questions about the fairness and transparency of the Department’s policies.

The contributions to the corpus fund, which is intended for the welfare of fishermen, especially in times of distress, has reportedly been overlooked for nearly eight years, leaving the affected fishermen community frustrated and seeking answers. Cacra fishermen are now demanding accountability and transparency from the Fisheries Department.

The fishermen are questioning the reasons behind this failure to collect the contributions, urging the Fisheries Minister to provide a clear explanation for the non-collection of contribution to the corpus fund. The lack of funds could potentially impact the welfare and financial stability of the non-motorised fishermen, they said.

They are now demanding that the government addresses the issue in the upcoming Assembly session.
