CALANGUTE: A group of locals from Calangute and Baga went on a rampage and demolished a night club at Umtta Vaddo, Calangute with the help of a JCB, while partially damaging two other night clubs at Calangute.
Calangute police late Saturday evening registered an FIR against Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and some others, following a police complaint that they were linked to the demolition and vandalism.
The locals also allegedly assaulted some workers of the night club in the process.
According to locals, the three night clubs were targeted because they were allegedly involved in illegal activities.
“Every time we complained to Calangute Police or authorities, there was no action forthcoming from any quarter. We were just fed up of merely submitting complaints. We therefore decided to demolish the night club as it was indulging in illegal activities,” said one local, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“This (demolition) should have been done much earlier, but it is always better late than never. We will insist on discotheques only for couples and not singles, to avoid prostitution in the near future,” the local said.
Incidentally, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Calangute Block BJP President Gurudas Shirodker and Calangute Block BJP Yuva Morcha President Yeshwant Kandolkar were seen on the road leading to Poriat football ground and Calangute Association hall.
A police complaint was filed by one Gajendra Singh accusing Lobo and some other persons of involvement in the demolition and vandalism. Calangute police is investigating the case.
