Calangute cops crack chain snatching case

mapusa: In a major breakthrough, Calangute police arrested four persons involved in chain snatching.

Calangute police said  a Belgaum-native, Kiran Patil had complained that on October 4, a person on a blue colour scooter stopped his car on the pretext saying that his scooter dashed by the complainant’s car; and then snatched away his gold chain weighing 20 grams worth Rs 75,000 from the complainant’s neck when the complainant lowered his car window. 

Following an investigation, Calangute Police led by Police inspector Nolasco Raposo,  apprehended the main accused, Sunil Rathod (24) native of Bijapur, who is presently residing at Orda, Candolim. Thereafter, during interrogations, they identified three of his associates,  Shirish Irappanawar (31), Rakesh Arolkar (38), both residents of Thivim and Sarvesh Raikar (28) resident of Panjim.

All of them were working as bouncers for a private security firm. Three stolen mobile phones were also recovered along with the gold in melted form. All the accused persons were produced before the JMFC, Mapusa and are remanded to 5 days police custody.

Further, Rathod will be further re arrested in another chain snatching case registered upon the complaint of Pune-native Chinmay Lodha, wherein three persons had intercepted Lodha and his friend at Baga and snatched two mobile phones, cash amount of Rs 6,500 and gold chain with locket worth Rs 60,000.

Rathod has confessed his involvement and further his other two associates identified as Nishan Mogar (22), native of Karwar and presently residing at Torda, Porvorim and Birender Kumar (25) a native of Bihar and presently residing at St Cruz have been taken into custody. The stolen gold chain and mobile phone have been recovered.
