CALANGUTE: A large number of locals from Naikka and Porba Vaddo, Calangute, on Tuesday protested over the discharge of sewage in an open storm water drain by a starred hotel at Porba Vaddo.
The locals submitted a memorandum to Calangute MLA Michael Lobo demanding immediate action against the hotel. Lobo, who rushed to the site, assured to take up the issue and asked Health Officer Dr Doreen Noronha to show cause the hotel for the mess.
Speaking to Herald, Mangaldas Salgaonkar said they have been highlighting the issue of open discharge of sewer in the storm water drains by the hotelier, polluting the surrounding and causing health hazards, but complained that nobody seemed interested in listening to them.
MLA Lobo said the water in the storm water drains has been polluted with the sewer discharge from the starred hotel.
“I am told that the health officials have inspected the site, but there is no action forthcoming from the authorities. The hotelier needs to be warned of the stinking mess of sewer discharge, as residents are the ultimate sufferers. I want the health officer to show cause the hotelier and seek disconnection of electricity and water for the mess,” said Lobo.
When Health Officer Dr Doreen Noronha arrived at the site, she immediately served a notice to the hotelier based on the directives of Lobo. The locals hope that swift action by health authorities will yield desired results.
