Calangute panch gets a nasty birthday surprise

CALANGUTE: The birthday bash proved costly for Calangute panch Paulo Thomas (Mathias) D’Souza, as his house was burgled and ransacked by unknown persons, while he celebrated his birthday with friends and family members on Thursday night.

The house was ransacked with all lights on inside the house, as burglars removed an LCD TV, CCTV receiver and clothes, besides cash of Rs 10,000 from D’Souza’s house, to give an impression that they were taking the items to the birthday party.
After the burglars left the site with the stolen goods, a worker outside the pancha’s house became suspicious of the incident and contacted D’Souza.
D’Souza then rushed home and immediately noticed a candle which was lit near the LPG cylinder pipe. He immediately extinguished the candle, thereby preventing the cylinder from bursting into flames and causing a major fire mishap.
D’Souza then alerted his friends and family about the incident, before notifying the Calangute police.
A Calangute police team rushed to the site and took stock of the situation. A police sniffer dog squad and fingerprint experts were pressed into service. No arrests have been made so far and Calangute PSI Manguesh Volvoiker is the investigating officer.
