CANACONA: While midnight masses in churches, parties and fireworks along the coastal areas welcomed the New Year, residents of Canacona on Sunday afternoon witnessed a unique presentation of Carnival floats.
Various floats, one especially dedicated to legendary cartoonist Mario Miranda, scaled through Chaudi streets before the massive New Year celebrations culminated in a wild bash with the groups performing at Palolem Beach.
The floats were part of ‘The festival of Canacona’ organized by Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, operating a star hotel (The Lalit Spa and Golf Resorts, Rajbag) with the people of Canacona.
Over 200 folk dancers of the regions, lots of music and a spectacular parade were part of the floats parade.
Nicknamed ‘The Carnival Ano Novo’ was flagged off by Law Commission Chairman Adv Ramakant Khalap from the porch of Hotel at Rajbag and the parade moved through streets of Ponsulem, Chaudi, Char Rasta and finished with an exhilarating spectacle of dance bash at Palolem Beach.
Besides the float especially dedicated to the life and works of Mario Miranda, another float on Goa’s Golden Jubilee celebrations: ‘Kranti Sangram’, Fisheries Practices, were a few other floats, which local residents reached onto the streets to watch.
Later, many tourists, including foreigners and scores of domestic tourists mixed with the dancing party as Lalit Suri Hospitality Group CMC Dr Jyostna Suri wished ‘Happy New Year’ and complimented the people of Canacona.
