VASCO: Opposition to the proposal of taking over and converting the multipurpose Sports Ground at airport road in Chicalim into a practice ground for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup is growing day-by-day in Mormugao with more and more people coming forward to oppose the move and the latest opposition has come from Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida who claimed that the proposal is anti-people and therefore the same has to be scrapped.
Speaking to reporters, Almeida said, “I am surprised to know about the proposal because everyone in Mormugao taluka knows about the importance of the Chicalim multipurpose ground which is used by people from different age groups. From cricket to football and other sports, including school sports functions are being organised at this very ground which has all the amenities. Besides that, hundreds of people especially senior citizens are using the ground for walking and therefore I have strong objection to the proposal,” he said.
Almeida further added, “Before any such proposal they should have consulted the locals and other stakeholders and as the same was not done I will meet the Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar with the demand to scrap the proposal in toto,” he said.
