Carmona Panchayat holds cleanliness drive in village

MARGAO: Carmona Panchayat along with scouts and guides of Sacred Heart of Jesus High School and around 50 villagers carried out a cleanliness drive on Saturday under the theme “Swachhata Hi Seva” and collected around 60 big bags full of dry plastic from the roadside and open spaces.
Before the plastic collection drive was held, there was programme at the school where all the students at the end of the assembly took a pledge not to litter and keep their surroundings clean. The students were led in taking the oath by Head Boy Nathan Furtado.
Carmona Acting Sarpanch Vailona Fernandes welcomed gathered people including the students, headmistress of the school Maria Elizabeth Mascarenhas urged the students to give up the habit of littering and adopt cleanliness as it is next to Godliness.
Retired Government School headmistress Immaculate Rodrigues who is a member of the Village Development Committee explained the importance of Gram Panchayat Development Plan and need for people to attend the special gram sabha on 2nd October to prepare the plan.
President of Carmona Farmers Club Blaire Rodrigues identifies some of the medicinal plants found in the village and asked people to protect and propagate those plants.
After the programme the students were divided in different groups along with the around 50 people present and they went throughout the village cleaning it up. The Carmona Villagers Welfare Forum, Carmona Farmers Club actively participated in the drive.
There were only two panchayat members present for the drive namely acting sarpanch Vailona Fernandes and former sarpanch Winston Dias. Incidentally Benicio Carvalho who has resigned as panchayat member participated in the drive.
