Carmona wants Bhumiputra Bill scrapped

CARMONA: The adjourned Carmona Gram Sabha, which was convened on Sunday, unanimously demanded the immediate scrapping of the hastily passed Goa Bhumiputra Adhikarini Bill 2021.

Speaking to reporters, Carmona sarpanch Allwyn Jorge said, “The Bhumiputra Bill was discussed with the members who unanimously resolved to write to the government to immediately scrap the Bill for being anti-Goan and for not referring the Bill to a Select Committee. The issue of repairing and renovating the village Tinto – a traditional slaughter house rocked the Carmona Gram Sabha with the members demanded urgent repairs of the dilapidated structure which is part of the village heritage. The Tinto mired in controversy with a court case which has been since dismissed was built by the municipality but after the panchayats were formed, the rights of the municipalities were handed over to the panchayats under government notification.”

Carmona sarpanch Jorge vowed to take up the repair works urgently requesting the assistance of the villagers and also proposed to commence the auctioning of the slaughtering activity at the same time. The issue of the development of the Sports upgradation project and the football ground was also deliberated with the sarpanch Jorge informing the Gram Sabha that the Sports upgradation project was re-estimated and re-tendered at a cost of Rs 1.9 crore by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) and the panchayat is awaiting details of its status. 

Regarding the football ground issue, the sarpanch clarified that his office has no information on the football ground issue and any information if received will be shared with the members. Members again resolved that the ownership of the football ground should always remain with the panchayat.

The issue of the fogging in the village by private individuals also dominated the proceedings and the Gram Sabha members resolved not to allow any fogging activity in the village without the permission of the health authorities and the panchayat due to health risks, hazards and environmental issues. 

Jorge also informed the members that his office has received a fogging machine from the Benaulim AAP ZP member Hanzel Fernandes and due to conflicting media reports, the panchayat will be writing to the ZP authorities if they have supplied the machine through ZP funds or else to return the same.
