MARGAO: Margao police have seized 70 rice bags each weighing 25 kgs at Rawanfond last night while these were being transported from Paroda to Margao.
Margao Police station in-charge, PI Sudesh Naik, told newsmen that the pick-up van was also detained since the driver Laximan Agasagi (49) and the other occupant Susham Lotlikar (55) could not produce the bills from where the rice was purchased by them.
“The Margao police acted on a tip-off that a Tata pick-up van was illegally transporting rice bags from Paroda to Margao. A team headed by PSI Pravin Gawas stopped the vehicle at Rawanfond at 9.30 pm and found the vehicle carrying the rice bags,” PI Naik said.
Replying to a question, he said the rice was allegedly brought from a fair price shop at Paroda and was being transported to Margao for sale in the open market. “The 70 plastic rice bags were duly packed having impression as ‘Lalgulab symbol of purity, 100 per cent Sortex broken rice net weight 25 kg each,’” he said.
During interrogation, the two accused disclosed that they had purchased the rice bags from one Damodar Kamat, resident of Paroda. A case under section 420, 120-B of the IPC and under section 3 read with section 7 of Essential Commodities Act has been filed against Agasagi, resident of Rumdamol, Sushma Lotlikar, resident of Santwado-Assolna and Damodhar Kamat, resident of Paroda.
