PANJIM, JULY 21
The cash starved City of Panaji will table its annual budget tomorrow evening.
After opposition councilor Surendra Furtado alleged that the civic body was reluctant to present the budget as they have deficit of Rs 15 crore, and other irregularities, the Corporation has finally given finishing touches to its budget.
The meeting which was to be held on June 29 was postponed after the Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues sought some time to study the budget.
Sanjit earlier had admitted that there are many irregularities and mismanagement in the budget which has forced CCP into a financial mess.
The CCP has been facing a shortage of Rs 5.41 crore annually which includes additional liabilities of Rs 2.42 crore and Rs 1.75 lakh arrears including 40 percent provident fund.
The CCP has an uphill task to meet the liabilities arising out of Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. Around 376 permanent employees have benefited under the pay revision. With Urban Development Ministry refusing to bail out CCP from financial mess, Rodrigues will have to opt for new methods to generate funds for the CCP coffers.
Sopo, hiking rent of new market shops and recovery from the shop allottees could be the sources CCP may be looking for.
The proposed pay parking scheme in the city would also help the CCP in income generation if the scheme is implemented.
