Cavelossim, Carmona fume at waste dumped in village

MARGAO: Hotel waste finding its way along the road sides along Salcete coastal belt came to the fore once again with agitated locals of Caveolossim and Carmona demanding action against the erring contractors and the hotel establishments.

The incident came to light when gunny bags stacked with hotel waste, including worn out staff shoes and socks, besides aluminium foil were dumped along the road near the power sub-station on the Cavelossim-Carmona border.
Inquiries conducted by a local resident Serafino Cota and other villagers revealed that the waste had come from two starred hotels and was probably dumped by the garbage contractors. “We have identified the two starred resorts from Varca based on the sugar sachets found inside the waste. It appears that the contractor has disposed off the waste which fetch revenue and preferred to dump the worn out socks and shoes along the road,” Cota said.
An agitated Cota along with his wife later lodged a complaint with the Colva police demanding action against the erring contractors. A complaint was later lodged with the Cavelossim Panchayat secretary who has promised to take up the issue with the Goa State Pollution Control Board and the Sub-divisional Magistrate, Margao.
Disposing of hotel waste along the roadsides along the coastal belt and on the outskirts of Margao city is a common phenomenon. The most affected area being the isolated road along the St John the Baptist Church, which had come in handy for unscrupulous contractors to dispose of the waste.
