Cavelossim village on Sunday mulled infrastructural projects in respect of sewage and power and has requested the government to implement the projects on a priority basis.
Sarpanch Edwin Barretto placed before the gram sabha the proposal to lay underground sewage line connecting the villages along Salcete’s coastal belt. He pointed out that the coastal villages are facing the problem of sewage disposal given the poor soil conditions and the lack of infrastructure to empty the overflowing septic tanks and soak pits.
“There should be a central sewage treatment plant along the coastal belt to take this growing menace. This project should be taken on a priority basis to prevent contamination of the underground water”, he said.
The Sarpanch also placed a proposal before the gram Sabha for the laying of underground power cabling in the village. “Due to high rate of salinity, the overhead electric wires have corroded giving sleepless nights to the villagers”, he said, adding that this problem could be overcome if the government goes for underground cabling in the village.
Baretto said he would request the Power Minister Alexio Sequeira to sanction the underground cabling project and to meet the power needs of the coastal village. Saying that Cavelossim does not have a full fledged d Junior Engineer, the sarpanch demanded that the Power department sanction a full-time JE, besides some linesmen to meet the situation.
Another project placed before the gram Sabha and got approval from the members was a bypass road connecting the bridge under construction linking Assolna and Cavelossim. The Sarpanch informed that a bypass should be constructed on a priority basis, saying  the existing road with a width of 3-4 meters will not be able to take the increased traffic after the bridge takes concrete shape.
The gram Sabha meeting also deliberated on the annual Goa Fest organized on the beach with members demanding to know the benefits accruing for the villagers. They sought to know the revenue earned by the village Panchayat through the Goa Fest.
When asked whether the Panchayat would permit Goa Fest in the village in the future, the Sarpanch said that he would go as per the stand adopted by the villagers. On garbage disposal, he said the Panchayat has proposed to the local Communidade to sanction land admeasuring 500 square meters for waste treatment.
