CB probing contract killing angle in Bengre murder

PANJIM: Crime Branch is investigating the contract killing angle in the
murder of Ashpaq Bengre at Colvale Jail though the accused Vinayak Karbhatkar admitted
killing the gangster in revenge.

Crime Branch officers said the possibility of establishing this angle to
the crime exists and that the contract could have been given to Karbhatkar from
outside the jail.

“The investigation is in progress and we are trying to investigate all
angles. We don’t want to keep any aspect unattended,” the officer said.

He said that cell phones which were operating in particular areas will
be accessed and scrutinized to establish the cell numbers. Only if the cell
numbers and the call details are established then the conspiracy might be
revealed, he said.

Crime Branch has recorded the statements of five witnesses who had seen
Karbhatkar attacking Bengre. The statements of all five have been recorded before
the magistrate, officials said.

Bengre was murdered on July 26 at Colvale jail where he had been imprisoned
under trial for a series of cases. He had been booked by Goa, Karnataka and
Punjab Police in almost 19 cases, whereas Karbhatkar, also undergoing trial,
was imprisoned at same jail and was booked by Goa and Maharashtra Police in 13
different cases.
