CURCHOREM: Councillors of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) opposed the proposed Rs 100 crore Solid Waste Management Facility (SWMF) project in its present form, which is proposed to be spread across 65,000 sq mts of land at Cacora-Curchorem.
At a Council meeting held on Monday, the councillors said they had no objection to build the project using European technology, but they expressed reservations over the required capacity of 100 tonnes of garbage per day.
They moved a resolution to undertake a tour of Pune to study a project in operation which needs smaller quantities of garbage.
The council also decided to have a special meeting to decide whether to auction or to allot the remaining 37 shops and platforms at SUDA market to the displaced traders.
The council has also passed a resolution to appoint an agency to reassess the tax of houses, hoardings and name plates of establishments.
Market ward Councillor Rocha Pereira raised the issue of encroachment on the footpaths and other areas of the market, stating that the council had not taken any action even after passing resolutions in this regard.
Speaking to Herald after the meeting, CCMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said he will put up a detailed proposal before the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) to seek the permission to conduct the Pune study tour for the councillors.
Regarding the demolition of two buildings in the market which are in dilapidated condition, Fernandes informed that the council has asked him to act as per the rules and regulation of the municipality.
He also informed that he will clear all the encroachments and extensions on the footpaths and other areas of the market within the shortest possible time.
