CCP gets HC notices over city market

PANJIM: The High Court Friday issued notices to the Corporation of the City of Panaji based on a PIL filed by citizens pertaining to the Panjim market. The notices are returnable by December 1. The CCP has been embroiled in the Panjim market issue including illegal occupants and leases not signed as well as illegalities pointed out by various inquiries.
Dabal man dies in car crash at Shigao
CURCHOREM: A 29-year-old resident of Shigao-Dabal died, while his friend escaped with minor injuries in a car accident at Cormonnem-Shigao. According to Curchorem police, Snehal Lohar along with his friend was proceeding in his car from Shigao towards Curchorem when he lost control of the vehicle and went off the road and dashed against a roadside tree at Cormonnem. Lohar was rushed to Primary Health Centre Curchorem. However, he died on the way to GMC Hospital in Bambolim. His friend escaped with minor injuries. The police after conducting post-mortem handed over the body to his relatives for final rites.
Ruckus over gas delivery at Varca
MARGAO: LPG consumers from Varca on Friday cried foul over the delay in the delivery of the LPG cylinders by the local agency, even as Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva sought the intervention of South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar to explore the possibility of opening a new gas outlet to meet the requirements of consumers of Varca and neighbouring areas. Silva rushed to Varca after local LPG consumers claimed that they do not receive the supplies on time. They also told the MLA that the staff engaged in the agency office should be courteous to the consumers. After much discussions, the Benaulim MLA took a delegation to the South Goa MP in Margao and drew his attention to the hardships faced by the local LPG consumers. “Since LPG gas cylinders fall within the ambit of the MP, I have impressed upon Sawaikar to streamline the distribution of LPG cylinders in Varca village,” he said. Silva also told the MP that the Centre should simplify the payments for the LPG cylinders.
Borkar surrenders, placed under arrest
CORTALIM: Former Sancoale sarpanch and Panch Ramakant Borkar, accused in a graft case, was finally arrested after he surrendered at the Verna police station on Friday evening. On the run for more than two months, Borkar surrendered after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by the High Court on Friday. Admitting that Borkar had surrendered, Verna PI Uday Parab said that he would be handed over to the Vigilance Department. “He is wanted by the Vigilance Department and will be handed over,” Parab told Herald. DySP (Vigilance) Bossuet Silva when contacted said that they would take Borkar’s custody on Saturday morning.
Consumers warned not to consume water
PANJIM: Due to suspected contamination of water in the areas of Malbhat, Gandhi Market, Station Road, Pajifond, near Virginkar fuel station in Margao city, consumers are requested not to consumer water released on November 21 and 22, which is released for flushing and disinfecting the supply pipelines.
Release of book on SFX today
PANJIM: A book titled ‘The heroic Saint Francis Xavier’ will be launched after the opening ceremony of the exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier on November 22, at Old Goa. The book has been authored by Patrick J Lobo and has a foreword by Fr Francisco Caldeira. The Nihil Obstat is given by Fr Manuel Pascoal Gomes, historian and imprimatur for the book is granted by Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrão. The soft cover book is well researched, illustrated with sketches, maps of the journeys, paintings, plans and colour photographs. The prologue traces the motivation of St Francis Xavier through St Ignatius Loyola, St Francis of Assisi to the Holy Spirit. The main section captures the saint and his achievements in great detail. It meticulously documents his life from birth to his last living moments. The proceeds of the books are dedicated to the Blessed Joseph Vaz Spiritual Renewal Centre, Old Goa.
Bhikoo Pai Angle felicitated
PANJIM: Mathagramasth Hindu Sabha’s Shree Damodar HSS celebrated the 90th birthday of Bhikoo Pai Angle on November 15, and also felicitated him on the occasion. President of MHS, Bhai Naik, Educationist, Bhikoo Pai Angle, Principal Rajeev Desai and Headmaster L Faleiro and staff were present. The students of Std XI welcomed with a song while Bhai Naik thanked Pai Angle for his service from 1983. Rajeev Desai also spoke. A certificate of honour was presented to Pai Angle Pai Angle in his reply advised teachers that teaching should be with love and affection.
