PANJIM: Taking serious note of the death a day average on Goan roads, the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways has directed the State government to undertake a road safety audit of the State Highways and State and District roadways.
The Union Ministry has in principle approved a Rs 200 crore fund under road safety for development and maintenance of accident prone areas of the State, while stating that more areas vulnerable to accidents need to be identified.
“The road safety audit is an important and serious activity which is vital for enhancing road related safety of all categories of road users and should bring out issues related to guiding or persuading the road users into desirable ways of on-road behavior through designs,” the letter issued by Union Ministry’s Chief Engineer (Road Safety) Ravi Prasad reads.
“The road safety audits are essential for improvement of road safety and prevention of accident. Audits are required at all stages, be it feasibility, design, construction or pre-opening,” the letter added.
As per the directions, the safety audit has to be undertaken for each kilometer (km-wise) covering all aspects of road safety.
