PANJIM: Disclosing plans to set up All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Goa, the Union Health Ministry has written to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar asking him to identify two or three suitable locations for the purpose. But the only worry here is that the initiative may not benefit Goan students since they are hardly able to qualify for AIIMS entrance examinations due to very high cut-off marks.
This year, no student qualified for AIIMS seats, as the only two students from Goa who bagged ranks at the all India pre-medical test (AIPMT) did not qualify for admissions to AIIMS. Abhijit Gupte who ranked 1,826 and Diya Gupta who ranked 4,707 at all India level, both students of Mushtifund Aryaan higher secondary school, have decided to join Goa Medical College, since they had to opt for one of the state medical colleges in the country in any case.
The best rank obtained by a Goan student at AIPMT was 575 by Shivam Goel a student of Mushtifund Aryaan HSS last year, who bagged a seat at AIIMS.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in his communication has expressed expansion plans for AIIMS saying, “Considering the requirement of pursuit of high standards of medical education and delivery of quality health care it is strongly felt that there should be more AIIMS-like institutes.”
States have been given a month to send in their provisions of land and infrastructure. After the Centre gets these details, a team will be sent to the State for site inspection. According to highly placed Secretariat sources, the State has identified nearly 10 lakh sq mtrs of area in the GMC Complex, Bambolim, itself for setting up of AIIMS.
