Centre puts ball in State court on Sanatan ban

PANJIM: The Centre has taken a safe stand on the controversial issue of terming Sanatan Sanstha a terrorist organisation, stating that law and order is the responsibility of the State government.

In an official communication to the Congress party in Goa, the Ministry of Home Affairs said ‘public order and police’ are primarily the responsibility of State governments. “The Government of India has issued guidelines on communal harmony, which are reiterated from time to time,” under secretary, Home,  M P Singh said in a letter addressed to Goa Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Sunil Kawthankar.
The party had on September 23, 2015, demanded that the ministry ban Sanatan Sanstha whose member is alleged to have killed Govind Pansare in Kolhapur.
The letter, sources said, hints that the Centre is not convinced that the Sanstha should be declared as a terrorist outfit.
