PANJIM: Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar on Thursday stated that the Union Ministry has agreed to grant Rs 80 crore for developing fisheries infrastructure in the State. The minister also said that the Centre would be issuing an advisory regarding a ban on LED fishing.
The decisions were taken at meeting held at New Delhi between State Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar and Union Fisheries Minister Radha Mohan Singh. Palyekar during the interaction revealed that the State has already prohibited fishing in the specified area by bull or pair trawling, and so too installation of fishing gear such as LED lights, fish light attractors or any other light equipment for trawling, purse-seining or gill netting within its territorial waters.
“It is therefore proposed that Central Government may like to prohibit LED light fishing beyond the territorial waters of the coastal state and also take the initiative to direct all the maritime states to prohibit LED light fishing in their respective territorial water as per the recommendation of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi,” he said.
He also requested the Union Minister to consider the revised estimate for the expansion of fish landing jetties at Malim, Chapora, Cortalim and Cutbona amounting to Rs 160 crore and sanction a central share of Rs 80 crore and grant additional time for the completion of the project.
