CEO acts where government failed

53 matka cases booked in two days; district SPs asked to clamp down on illegal gambling

PANJIM: Acting against the use of all possible sources of money power in the Assembly elections, the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) has asked the Police Department to crack down on ‘matka’ gambling across the State to avoid it being used as a conduit to distribute money or exert muscle power for the polls.
In the last two days, 53 cases have been booked, which include 37 in the South and 16 in the North district.
Addressing media persons on Monday, CEO Kunal said that all possible steps are being taken to preserve the sanctity of the election process. “Money and muscle power is being tackled. Matka is a medium for money and muscle power. Matka, which involves gambling, is seen in every corner in the State,” the CEO said.
Kunal said that both District SPs have been issued clear instructions to ensure that matka is controlled effectively.
“This is a part of the measure to prevent matka being used to distribute money during the elections,” he said.
The CEO has already alerted the Police to curb the narcotics trade, which could possibly be used to distribute money by candidates.
“Apart from this, our eyes are on anti-socials and on almost a daily basis, those who are likely to create problems in the locality are being booked,” he said.
