PANJIM: The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Goa on Tuesday issued a public notice warning of strict action against political functionaries who are trying to approach postal ballot to exert undue influence on them to vote in their favour.
The Public Notice comes following a complaint filed by Congress alleging that BJP leaders are approaching its candidates with an intention to poach them after the poll results on March 10. The Opposition also alleged that the BJP was even trying to influence postal ballot voters.
The Additional CEO has warned of action under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
“It has come to the notice of the Office of CEO that some political functionaries are trying to approach the voters who are slated to cast their votes through postal ballot, CEO has warned that action will be taken against violators under Representation of the People Act and also 171 B and 171 C of the Indian Penal Code. Similarly, if any voter demands any gratification for voting through a postal ballot, strict action under the law and departmental action will be initiated,” the notice reads as.
The notice further sought cooperation from the general public if they have any specific complaint with evidence. The complainants are asked to mail to the Office of CEO on email id: ceo_goa@eci.gov.in or contact the Additional Chief Electoral Officer or the District Election Officer/Collectors in person.
CEO also sought a report from District Election Officers and Director General of Police pertaining to Congress’ accusations over alleged postal ballot malpractices by the ruling BJP.
