Alert villagers of Panchawadi-Shiroda nabbed a 33-year-old chain snatcher from Kasavli-Mollem on Friday at about 3 pm.
According to Ponda police, the incident occurred when Santosh Pawaskar, who was traveling in his two-wheeler (GA-02-C-7232), went to a residence of one Carmelina D’Souza and called her out of the house on the pretext that he wanted some matter. As the aged woman came out of the house, Santosh snatched the gold chain from her neck and proceeded towards his motorcycle.
Hearing D’Souza shouting for help, few villagers rushed to the site and nabbed the culprit. Later, the villagers called Ponda police and handed the accused over to the police.
PSI Tukaram Chavan arrested Santosh and recovered the gold chain, amounting to Rs 40,000.
Meanwhile, cleaning a well proved costly to a 45-year-old man from Kavlem-Ponda, after he died in the well due to suffocation. The incident occurred on Friday at about 9 am when one Gokuldas Gajanan Sawant had descended into the well to clean it. However, Sawant died due to suffocation. Ponda police later conducted the inquest.
