MARGAO: Chandor villagers led by Goencho Ekvott activists on Thursday stopped the work of filling the land which they claim is “Church property”.
The locals claimed that Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias had earlier assured of stopping the work in the Church property.
The villagers along with the activists of the Goencho Ekvott NGO went to the Church property in Ponsabhat-Guirdolim in Chandor and stopped the work that was carried out by the Railways.
They alleged that the Railways is filling the land with mud and has undertaken piling work for the retaining wall, which they claim is Church property.
The villagers after stopping the work approached the Chandor Police Outpost and demanded that their complaint against the Railways officials be registered.
When they approached the Maina Curtorim PI, he said, “I will look into the matter, call for all the land documents and plans, and will decide on the matter”.
The people alleged that the work of the Railways is taking place in the Church land which has not been acquired.
The villagers and protestors said on Friday they would file a complaint with Water Resource Department, Forest Department, Collector, TCP and Deputy Collector against the destruction of sluice gates rivulets, and other water bodies.
