MARGAO: Agitated over the fact that heavily loaded trucks ply at reckless speed through the village, Chandor villagers along with the sarpanch Edward D’Silva on Monday stopped all trucks plying through the village in the afternoon. Earlier the villagers, were concerned with their safety given how these trucks pass through Chandor, especially near the only high school in the village and usually at around 1:30 pm when the school ends.
“In all around 30 trucks were stopped,” said Edward, while adding that many of them were carrying coal and were headed towards Sanguem, while there were some unloaded trucks proceeding towards Margao. When someone questioned the Sarpanch about this could lead to traffic problems, he retorted that lives of the people, particularly students are more important.
Maina Curtorim Police Inspector (PI) Gurudas Kadam rushed to the site and after he was shown the order from the Collector South, prohibiting heavy vehicles from plying through the village, the police inspector directed his staff to fine the truck drivers.
In all 15 truck owners were issued challans and they were booked for reckless driving and passing through no entry roads. Edward clarified that they were stopping only those trucks transporting coal and boulders and would not stop trucks carrying construction material.
Conceding that it is difficult for the police to constantly monitor the movement of vehicles through the village given their staff constraints; PI Kadam, added that random checks will conducted regularly from now.
