MAPUSA: A day after residents found dead fish floating in the Tar River at the Ganesh Visarjan Site, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Clen Madeira in a letter to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday has asked the board to check quality of water and prepare a detailed analysis.

The residents claimed that the colour of the water changed due to some discharge of chemical or poison.
Stating that it is MMC’s duty to look after the Tar River, social activist Shekhar Naik said:”The Tar River has turned into gutter. People eat fish from this river which is harmful. It is sad to see the fish dying. It appears that some chemical or poison is released since the water colour has changed and a layer of an oily substance is seen. It’s the responsibility of the municipality to look after the Tar River. The Government needs to take strict action into the matter”.
“The water has been contaminated since the last few years. The water is not flowing and gets accumulated. We have highlighted the issue but nobody is bothered to clean the river,” claimed a Mapusa resident.
The residents alleged that release of sewage has also polluted the river and the lack of oxygen has caused the fish deaths. A part of the river falls in Bastora jurisdiction, the Bastora Panchayat has also sent a letter to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) requesting it to take necessary steps.
