MARGAO: Following the recent accident at Uzro-Raia that left two 12-year-old football players injured, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) and other authorities conducted an inspection of the accident-prone site. The objective was to deliberate on measures to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
During the inspection, Camorlim panchayat members and Traffic Cell-Margao suggested various measures, including the installation of speed breakers and the extension of dividers to discourage overspeeding.
The inspection was attended by Camorlim panchayat members, Margao traffic police, Mamlatdar, a representative from the Saviour of the World High School in Loutolim, where the injured children study, and a few locals. Prabodh Shirwaikar, Deputy Superintendent of Traffic, was also present at the site.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Peter Borges, Commissioner of GSCPCR, emphasized the importance of the PWD’s involvement based on suggestions received from representatives and locals present at the site. He stated that another inspection will be conducted to decide on preventive measures with the presence of PWD representatives.
Basilio Fernandes, Sarpanch of Camorlim village panchayat, suggested the installation of speed breakers and traffic signals at the site. He also recommended reducing the gap between dividers.
Gautam Salunke, Police Inspector of Traffic Cell-Margao, suggested the erection of signboards and extending the dividers until the junction. Additionally, he proposed the installation of rumblers and speed breakers on internal roads.
Raia residents pointed out that the current rumblers installed at the site were ineffective, as vehicles continued to travel at high speeds on both sides. This situation has made residents of Solva and Gavon wards afraid to cross the road.
