MARGAO, MARCH 7
A day after they opposed high rise building projects, Deussua-Chinchinim villagers on Monday handed over a memorandum to the sarpanch demanding scrapping of the project and work out a solution to the long pending issue of garbage disposal.
A 15-member delegation called on the Sarpanch Olwyn Antao and handed a memorandum containing the resolutions passed at the meeting on Sunday, opposing the building project.
“When the Sarpanch pointed out that the construction project has been approved by the Town and Country planning department, the delegation told him to write back to the TCP stating the public opposition to the project”, informed Neves Anthony Rebello.
He said the Panchayat would write to the TCP within the next 3-4 days and convey the strong opposition to the high rise project on grounds that the project would aggravate the deteriorating infrastructure such as power, water and garbage disposal.
Meanwhile, the delegation served a 21-day deadline on the Panchayat body to work out a solution to the garbage menace facing the village.
The delegation impressed on the Sarpanch to re-commence the waste collection drive which was discontinued for reasons best known to the Panchayat body.
In the absence of garbage collection and disposal, waste and garbage finds its way along side the village road, causing health hazard and nuisance to the villagers.
