MARGAO: Director of Education Anil Powar may have left it to the discretion of higher secondary schools to fix timings of classes on condition that the schools complete their syllabus on time. However, girl students of the higher secondary are not happy.
On Monday, they cried foul over the timings saying it was unsafe to return home after 6.30 pm and wondered whether the government would intervene and ensure their safety by rescheduling the class timings.
With the Chowgule Management failing to address the issue over the timings, the students today protested in the college campus by shouting slogans. They threatened of taking up their grievances with higher authorities, while at the same time accusing the management of ignoring their genuine and just demands.
Girl students pointed out that Std XI classes start at 12.30 pm and end only at around 6.30 pm in the evening, creating an unsafe environment to return home. Moreover, they pointed out that the new time table implemented by the school has no provision for a break, with students facing problem of concentration.
While saying that the higher secondary school has levied a fee of Rs 7,000 for Std XI, the students maintained they were not aware of what facilities the college is providing. “In spite of the high fees, certain facilities such as the ACs are kept off,” they said.
Meanwhile, Fatorda MLA Vjiai Sardesai said the government should initiate action against the Chowgule Education Society and resolve the grievances of the students. “The government has only paid lip service to the demands of the students right from the time of admissions. The government should ensure safety of the Chowgule girl students and forthwith resolve all other genuine grievances,” he demanded.
