MARGAO: Ending days of suspense, the Chowgule Higher Secondary School has finally decided to give admissions to 200 students for the Science stream this academic year.
But parents and students sought to remind Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar about his assurance to give admissions to all students at the higher secondary when the Education Department opened the admission process last week.
Three days after the higher secondary opened online admissions, the school fixed 76.17 per cent as the cut-off percentage while posting the merit list on the school website this evening.
Principal R V Gaonkar told Herald that the higher secondary will give admissions to around 200 students this academic year. “We have given admissions to all the students who had applied in the reserved quota (SC, ST, OBCs). Around 57 students from the reserved category are eligible for admissions to XI science, while 143 students from the general category will get admissions,” he said.
As far as Arts is concerned, he said the higher secondary school will run only one division like last year.
When it was pointed out that though the higher secondary will give admission to 200 students, many students will be still left out, Principal Gaonkar shot back “We have to maintain certain yardstick while giving admissions. Only those students who figure in the merit list are eligible for admissions”.
Monday saw a large number of students and parents making their presence felt at higher secondary hoping that the school will come out with the merit list, only to be told that the list will be posted on the website at 5 pm in the evening.
Both parents and students demanded that the Chowgule higher secondary give admission to all students, recalling the promise made by the Chief Minister.
